Lettuce and Cabbage

When I planted my fall garden, I bought the cabbage plants from walmart and planted the lettuce from seed. Here is the cabbage when I planted it. It by far is the prettiest color in my garden. I really have enjoyed the lettuce too, I have two different kinds. I think because it has been so warm here, one type of lettuce I planted went to seed. When a plant is finished producing, it sends a shoot up with the seed pods on it. I guess it is natures way of continuing the process of life. Last year I saved lettuce seeds and this year I will do the same. I will cut them and hang the seeds upside down to dry out and plant them again in the fall. The best scenario in a garden is harvesting your food and seeds, so the crops costs nothing to restart. I love having fresh lettuce and many mornings I go pick some for school lunch sandwiches. That’s the best!
