Turning over the soil and replanting
-
When I replant I cut the old plant at the base or pull it out at the root if it’s easy enough to get out of the soil. I then take a sharp knife and cut through the sections of soil. You will find big root balls with this method of gardening. I then cut up the roots and break up the soil with my hands. I took a picture of the root system I just recently worked with.
The roots tend to make a thick web along the bottom of the tub. I cut all these up and leave them in the soil to decompose. At this point you can add more soil before replanting. I usually add compost from my composter or buy a bag of organic soil. Rose soil is the best if you can find some, as it is full of great nutrients for your garden. I love replanting in my garden because it is so easy. After the initial cost of building it, there is little upkeep to continue to garden each season.
