Tomatoes on two different types of trellis
-
I planted four tomato plants on my cattle panel trellis and two tomato plants on my nylon trellis. All six are doing great, and I have over 15 tomatoes on one plant! It is exciting to see my first spring tomatoes! One tip on tomatoes, I trim or break off the extra leaves at the bottom of the plant. I think that helps free up the plant to grow taller instead of bush out at the base. I also like to see the soil for watering, fertilizing and adding compost.
Instead of referencing each post back to a previous post, I have made categories for each thing I grow. To see previous tomato posts, click on the tomato category to the right. I think this will help me post quicker and help others look up the progress of a certain plant. Learning to blog has been almost more challenging than learning how to grow things! I hope you find your way around and get motivated to grow something.
About the cattle panel trellis: it is a cattle panel that is 50 inches by 16 feet. I bought it for $19 at a local hardware store called McCoys. I arched it and placed it between two of my boxes.
About the nylon trellis: I made a wooden frame on the back of one of my boxes out of two cedar 1×2’s and a nylon trellis (came in a package at home depot). I screwed these boards to the frame and bolted them together at the corners. I then stapled the trellis to the boards.
Tomatoes have to have something to support them, either a trellis or a cage. Before I had a trellis, I turned a tomato cage upside down and buried it deep in the tub. This works just as well as a trellis.

I have a question… If you trim the bottom leaves to encourage height instead of width in tomatoes, could you plant them closer than 3 feet apart? ( I am hoping) lol.
Mary,
I certainly plant mine closer than 3 ft and have success with them. I think you will be fine too.
Good luck!

I just purchased the plans for building my raised garden this year! I am so excited and can’t wait to get started (even tho we just got 7 inches of snow on the ground! 🙁 ) I am so ready for a garden that I don’t have to break my back bending over to weed and care for. I have Crohn’s disease and Fibromyalgia and this design was truly an answer to my prayers! The plans are so simple to follow that I think I can even build it myself…I am hand with a saw and drill and such. Thank you a thousand times over!
Oh I am so excited for you!! Good luck and stay in touch and let me know how you are doing! Best wishes!!

Do you grow determinate or indeterminate tomatoes in the beds? My husband just built my first bed from your plans and I’m deciding what to put in them!
