Planting this Saturday!
-
This Saturday I am going to plant my fall/winter garden! I am planting spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, beans, kale, onions, lettuce, and swiss chard. I am gathering seeds this week and plan to rotate my soil as well. When I had surgery I let me garden go and some weed seeds blew in. I am afraid to just pull them in fear they might come back, so I am getting new soil. I am very much looking forward to a day in the garden. I will take pictures and share soon! If you haven’t planted a fall/winter garden and live in the south, it’s time! Fall/winter gardens are great because they need less water and have fewer bugs. I am so excited!
I found this picture on the Burpee site. You can order seeds online at several places or find them at your local hardware store.

Hi Melanie,
Am excited to see how your winter garden does! We have a lot of the same things planted. My “winter garden” was planted about 3 weeks ago. We have lettuce, arugula, spinach, swiss chard (rainbow and regular), Russian kale, Dino kale, snow peas, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and turnips.
The green beans and turnips are iffy for our central CA location, but what the heck… I had the seeds, might as well see what comes of them!
My winter garden includes 3 of your beds now, and we plan to add a 4th in the summer. This is in addition to the traditional raised beds (2) that the previous homeowner built.
Also, I have an exciting experiment I’m undertaking this winter! I am going to attempt to adapt your bed design to build a CHICKEN COOP! How fun is that? I will, of course, share the results!
Happy Gardening!
Diane
Diane,
So exciting about planting your winter garden! I love gardening in the winter so much better than the summer. It is easier with the bugs to contend with.
Wow – please keep me updated about the chicken coop! I have always wanted chickens! We had them when I was a child – memories!
please stay in touch!
best wishes in your garden,
Melanie
